Printing

I have made the transition from Macdraft (which kept crashing disastrously) with relief.
QCAD has a different concept which took a little learning but I am now becoming quite adept (and it hasn't crashed once!).
However, I am having problems printing.
My drawings generally have two layers;- one is a template with fixed information and drawing references, date etc, whilst the other is the drawing itself. When printing, the template seems to rule and is scaled to fit the paper size. This means that generally, the drawing itself does not fit the paper size available and the detail is lost. I need to scale the template or the drawing so that they both make best use of the paper size available.
Anybody help please?
