I'm having trouble setting up the environment in the new software.
I'm familiar with Autocad, but rusty.
I'm trying to setup a 50 page drawing for wiring diagrams.
I need to draw 50 ea 8" by 11" rectangles, 5 rows of 10 rectangles and in those rectangles I'll draw schematics.
Each rectangle will eventually get a view/printer port.
I need a grid resolution of about 1/32, I can work in decimals.
I can't seem to get this set up so I can draw one 8" by 11" rectangle.
The ruler seems to just go crazy.
Any help is appreciated.

Re: New User - Setup for Schematics
Hi kontiki,
However, I would start with the setup for the "Drawing preferences" (Menu/Edit/Drawing preferences).
What you need to setup (in your case) is:
Dimension Settings:
Drawing Unit:
Grid settings:
Page settings:
After all settings are done save the drawing.
Note: This setup is only for your actual drawing. If you need those settings for all new drawings you need to adjust the settings below "Application Preferences".
I'm waiting for your answer regarding the Page size (8 or 8.5) - then I will tell you how easy it is to create a rectangle array with QCAD ...
May I ask you why you need 8" by 11" and not 8.5" by 11"?kontiki wrote:I need to draw 50 ea 8" by 11" rectangles, 5 rows of 10 rectangles and in those rectangles I'll draw schematics.

IMO - ignore the ruler. The rulers are just for a brief orientation and not meant to design a precisely drawing. Just my two cents ...kontiki wrote:The ruler seems to just go crazy.

Work smart, not hard: QCad Pro

Re: New User - Setup for Schematics
Thanks, I tried most of these settings, hadn't found page.
Actually the pages can be 8.5 x 11.
Drawing area will actually be 8x10.5 because of the page border.
Seems easy to draw a rectangle.
I typically snap to grid and use ruler to see about where I am, for my end points.
I couldn't tell if I was drawing a 8.5 x 11 inch rectangle or a 850 by 1100 inch rectangle.
With schematics and wiring diagrams, majority of work will be full size 1:1, size only translates to user readability for me.
I do want all 50 sheets in front of me, it just makes it easier to get around.
I will have to figure out how to make incremental coordinates, in Autocad you precede the incremental value coordinates with a "@."
Thanks

Re: New User - Setup for Schematics
That looks pretty awesome!
I'm working up wiring diagrams for my airplane as I repair and capture changes made to it over the past 35 years.
I do want my hobby efforts to potentially scale up is if I decide to setup a one man engineering shop.
I bought QCadV3.12 for Win 7.
My next step will be set up view/print ports for sheet 1-50?
Then start working on my symbol library as I go.
I do want to explore setting up an exportable BOM and an index of wire and equipment numbers to DWG sheet cross reference.
Those are typically the hard things for me to keep straight.
Is there database support?
Every wire and equipment ID should ideally map to a list of wire types, lengths, terminations, sheet etc.
Thanks for all the help.

Re: New User - Setup for Schematics
You know that you are eligible to update that version of QCAD one year free of charge ...kontiki wrote:I bought QCadV3.12 for Win 7.
Sounds like a plan ...kontiki wrote:I do want my hobby efforts to potentially scale up is if I decide to setup a one man engineering shop.

I'm sure Andrew can better answer this question than me.kontiki wrote:Is there database support?

Re: New User - Setup for Schematics
The QCAD scripting environment gives you access to almost the entire Qt and QCAD APIs. Qt has support for various SQL data bases, including SQLite and MySQL which allows you to create a database, connect to a data base, execute queries, etc.kontiki wrote:Is there database support?
It is also possible to add custom properties to entities in QCAD. Such a custom property could for example be an ID that refers to a data base.
