Support Request -Sharing Files -problems between PC and MAC

Post by holmside » Fri Apr 01, 2016 2:04 pm

Dear All,
Not sure if anyone has this issue. Of course it may be me as a new QCAD user.
I am enjoying learning and the Book that Andrew has produced is a great time saver.
I have produced some drawings that I want to share with a friend that also uses QCAD.
I am using QCAD version 3.13.1.0 (3.13.1) - build date March 17 2016.
I am running this on a Mac - OS X El Capitan 10.11.3.
I have saved files as R27 (2013) DFX Drawing (Teigha) (*.dfx)
My friend running QCAD, slightly oder version, on a PC running Windows 8.
I can view and edit files that he sends to me - but he can't see any of the content from files that I send to him.
I have tried to open my files from my dropbox on his machine and still no success.
Any help appreciated as I plan to send my files to a laser cutter.

Do you know the exact version of QCAD he's using?

Older QCAD versions cannot load DXF R27 (simply because that format version didn't exist at that time). You may want to try saving as DXF R24 which is supported by all QCAD versions >=3.0.

If the problem persists, please attach the file in question, thanks.

Many thanks for such a prompt and helpful reply. My friend is using Version 3.7.7.0 Build date 20th Jan 2015.

I have sent a R24 file as well as the R27 and he cant open either. Strangely when I send a file he sent me of another drawing and I then copy some of my drawings into the file he can open it.

I have attached my original file 'four facet drill grinder' and the file that he sent me and I edited - title 'test for Brian'.
Really appreciate the expertise you are sharing
Thank you

The problem is caused by a huge entity (a circle) in the drawing.
Newer versions of QCAD ignore such bogus entities while older QCAD versions try to auto zoom which leads to an empty display.

To fix the problem, please delete the offending entity as described at:

Dear Andrew,

Many thanks all sorted thanks - just removed the massive circle I had somehow created and all was fine.
I am really am enjoying using QCAD and am increasing in confidence every day. The file is going to the Laser cutter this week and I am sure it will be great. My first proper CAD output in less than a weeks worth of learning. Beats so many other CAD programmes!

Thanks again for your kind help and excellent support..
