Select entities then type IS or select "total length of selection" from Info menu. No visible report of total length appears.

Please check the output of the command line history (View - Tool Bars - Command Line). It should show the total length of the selection.

Sorry about reporting this as a bug. I had the command window set too small for it to show. It appears to be working fine.
