The rectangle and polygon tools should be considered auxiliary line tools which produce commonly used shapes with lines. These shapes usually serve as a basis for a more complex drawing. In the process of creating this more complex drawing, the original shape will likely not survive as a whole at which point single lines are more appropriate than a polyline.
