Does an entity really needs an end to work properly with the hatch from segments tool?
If so an ellipse in a circle shouldn't work either ... but it does.

Note that this tool is not selecting entities. It is highlighting entity segments which are later used as hatch boundary. You don't have to create 40 blocks. Just select all the trees you want to change by clicking with the mouse and holding down the shift key. Then you can move the selection directly or you can create a temporary block just in case you want to change or use the selection again.
