1.Draw a 100 mm line
2.Centre and draw a 50 mm line
3.Try to select the 50 mm line
4.Any ideas? I must be missing the obvious.

Press and hold the ALT key on your keyboard / click with the left mouse button on the "multiple entity / chose within the context menu the entity for a selection - do what ever is needed to be done with this selection.

Also - go a little up and to left of the 50mm line and select going right and down to select the entire 50mm line. This will only select the entity(s) that are fully enclosed in selection bounds - not selecting the 100mm line.

If you have the feeling ..... something must be there ..... but you don't know the exact position then use the "Select rectangle area" tool. The rectangle selection tools comes with two modi.
1. Select from the left to the right and it will select everything what is entirely INSIDE the selection box.
2. Select from the right to the left and it will select everything what is IN the selection box and ALL entities which are CROSSED by the selection box boundary.

In this case use 1.
