Fill a non-equilateral triangle

Post by OldNick » Sun Feb 23, 2020 11:29 am

I want to create a non-equilateral triangle and fill it.

My problems are:
- I can only see that I can create an equilateral triangle using the shape tool.
- if I create my desired triangle using lines, I can't figure out how to make them a closed contour for filling
- I can't even find a fill/hatch tool.
- I have searched online and can't get any useful advice on this.

Thanks for any help.

You can hatch any geometrically closed form by: Draw..Hatch from selection. (HA)
or Draw..Hatch from Segments. (HS)

In the first case you start the method with a valid closed selection.
In the second case you will have to point out the segments afterwards one by one up to a valid selection.

Filling is a solid fill hatch.

A not closed form is usually the problem.
With a selection you could try: Polyline from selection.(OC)
OC will try to connect most of the selection, its joining tolerance can be set under: Edit..Application Properties. (Ctrl+,)
If that one turns out logically closed in the property editor, then you are good.
OG works too but this will not generate a logically closed form but it can be geometrically closed and that is fine too.
With OG you have the options at hand and you can see where it halts for whatever reason there might be.
A little similar as 'Hatch from Segments' but you are allowed to do other things in between.

Don't get this wrong, you don't need a polyline.

For complex boundaries the second option (HS) is not always a good choise.
It is better to properly prepare such a boundary seperate and use the HA method.

Remark that your hatch is generated on the active layer, so you have to set the target before you lauch the tool.

If you know the side dimensions, it is a simple construction with 2 circles: then draw your lines, snap at end, intersection and end again. Your contour will be closed, you may then fill it with the hatch tool...
