Open Source Nesting

Post by Husky » Mon Aug 01, 2016 11:06 pm

Hi everybody,

if somebody is in need to use an Open Source Nesting Software try SVGnest. http://www.svgnest.com/

It works with svg files which easily can be exported/imported with QCAD Pro. Maybe a suitable solution for occasionally nesting needs.

Note: This tool isn't yet perfect but normally good enough for small cnc projects. Just test it - maybe it suits your needs.
Work smart, not hard: QCad Pro
Win10/64, QcadPro, QcadCam version: Current.

Thanks Husky for highlighting this useful tool, it is much welcomed :D

Okay here's my test with this and a few important notes:
1. This is a drawing with 101 thumb tacks I wish to laser cut.

Thumb Tacs.jpg
Thumb Tacs.jpg (78.47 KiB) Viewed 65264 times
2.After exporting the file to SVG in QCAD the first result is not good, as you can see 'SVG Nest' doesn't like Arcs or Splines
Arcs and Splines don't work.jpg
Arcs and Splines don't work.jpg (61.47 KiB) Viewed 65264 times
You can see that some of the thumb tacks have the 'domed' head inverted, these are the ones which are splines.

The domed heads which look good are arcs ... but you have to change the whole of the outline to a polyline in QCAD in order to get this result ... if you don't you will get the inverted result!

*Note - if you try to work with a spline and change this to a polyline it doesn't work either (not for me anyway).

3.So currently for the best results when using SVG Nest, use lines, arcs and change to a polyline .. or of course just use polylines in QCAD. The result worked for me.
Use Lines and Polylines only.jpg

4.Next, export to SVG in QCAD and upload this to the SVG Nest program. Follow the instructions (so simple) and change the configurations as required.

5.This is the result after 4 iterations. Not bad hey 8).
Nesting Complete.jpg

6. Then download your nested SVG file and open up in QCAD and job done

Once again a big thank you to Husky.

For the best support please state your operating system, QCAD version and add any supporting DXF/DWG files, screenshots etc...

Another open source nesting software: Deepnest

In short: Offline software, available for Windows, Mac and Linux. It can read DXF, SVG and Corel CDR files and it can write DXF and SVG files.

I'm still testing it but till now ..... I like it!
Check it out by yourself:

Hi,

depends on the used program ...

SVGnest is only online available what means it needs always an internet connection.

Deepnest can be installed on your computer and needs only for the download of the program an internet connection. After that it works without it.

32/64 bit? Probably doesn't matter ...

I installed ubuntu 18.04 x64.
the application starts, but with a long delay (about 10 seconds)
How fast does it load for you?
PS
very good app.
Thanks to the author for the open source code !!
but (probably) this application is not very common,
there is no place to chat with users ((

Hi Husky

I tried Deepnest it's very good..I did download it and it runs offline but it doesn't read in the DXF files or nest? It must rely on a connection to work...unless they've changed the software recently..try it with no internet connection a see..

I get this error :-
" could not connect to conversion server"

Cheers

I never tested that but you are right. After I cut my cable it wasn't working anymore. :( :( :(

But ...................... it looks like it needs only for a dxf the internet connection. The same drawing exported with QCAD to svg works without WIFI. 8)

Try it.

BTW: Do you have any idea how to repair a WIFI cable what is cut in half ...

Hi Husky
Yep you're right SVG no problems at all.. that's really good thanks for pointing that out,I was going to uninstall because things that rely on the internet can some day disappear and leave you with useless software...
It's definitely a keeper now...

Cheers...

Hi Husky

Just tested with quite a few parts and it worked great, apart from this file, somehow it seems to of reversed some arcs? any idea what might be going on... it's in metric, was going to nest on a 2400x1200mm sheet...see picture and attached file..
