Copying Entities from one Drawing to Another

Post by andrew » Wed Mar 21, 2018 2:29 pm

To copy entities from one drawing into another drawing, please proceed as follows:

1. Open both drawing files with QCAD.
2. Switch to the source drawing and select the entities you want to transfer.
3. Choose Edit > Copy (or choose Edit > Copy with Reference and click a reference point).
4. Switch to the target drawing and choose Edit > Paste
5. Click a position to place the entities in your drawing

Troubleshooting

The entities changed color when pasting.

If the source drawing contains a layer "A" which is red and the target drawing also contains a layer "A" but that is blue, this effect may occur. You can tick the option Overwrite layers in the options toolbar to overwrite layer "A" in this case, but be aware that this changes your target drawing.

A block reference changed its appearance / content when pasting.

If the source drawing contains a block "A" and another block "A" (with a different content) is also present in the target drawing, this effect may occur. Please make sure your block definitions are compatible, rename the block or tick "Overwrite Blocks" in the options toolbar to use the block definition of the source drawing for all references to block "A".

The pasted entities don't have the correct size / scale or are rotated.

If the source and target drawings use different units, QCAD converts the entities from the source to the target unit. Please check the drawing unit of both the source and the target drawing under Edit > Drawing Preferences > General > Drawing Unit.

It is also possible that the scale factor is not 1 or the rotation angle is not 0 in the options toolbar when pasting:
