Hatch Patterns For Beginners

Post by John Hyslop » Sat Jan 18, 2020 9:00 am

Hi All
This is my 1st attempt at creating a tutorial on how common hatches are created using a text editor.
There are many types of hatches and many different ways to create them some have over 10 numbers in
one line others have only 5 or less, but this is the most common of all hatches so I thought I would do
this 1st...For this example and all others I will use the K.I.S.S. approach ( keep it simple stupid )
so everyone should be able to understand this and be able to make your own simple hatches this way.
Please note for basic patterns, angles should be kept to these 0,45,90,and increments of these, negative
values can also be used.
Just to keep things simple for now...I hope everyone understands this "Hatch Patterns For Dummies"
I've created, have fun ;-) I've deliberately made the text an image so you need to type in 8)
VERY IMPORTANT A CARRIAGE RETURN MUST EXIST AT THE END OF THE FILE OR IT WON"T WORK
JUST PRESS ENTER AFTER YOU'VE FINISHED THE LAST LINE...

PDF of image attached too...
Cheers
John
PS Qcad must be restarted after a hatch has been copied to the patterns/imperial or patterns/metric
so if you also make any modifications that will need a restart too.... these folders are read only so don't
edit directly in them, edit the file somewhere else eg Desktop then copy to the folder...
That's if you have an installed version if you have a portable version or folder on your Desktop or elsewhere
you will be able to save your edits in that folder..

Cheers

Hi All

Here is my second tutorial on making basic hatch patterns, please read the very 1st post for important information regarding hatch patterns..
As you can see when you introduce angles there is far more work to do :-)
Make a drawing similar to my layout so you can place dimensions that you will need to create the hatch...
Experiment with patterns similar to my Lattice Patterns and see how you go...pdf of image attached..
happy hatching :-)
Cheers

Here is my Third tutorial on making basic hatch patterns, please read the very 1st post for important information regarding hatch patterns..
As you can see when you introduce angles there is far more work to do :-)
Make a drawing similar to my layout so you can place dimensions that you will need to create the hatch...
Experiment with similar patterns and see how you go...pdf of image attached..
I'm now uploading Printer friendly versions , happy hatching :-)

Hi All
1st of all I'd like to apologize for a couple of spelling mistakes "Pend Down,Pen Up" should say "Pen Down,Pen Up"
This is how you would make a basic brick pattern :-)
So here is my Forth tutorial on making basic hatch patterns, please read the very 1st post for important information regarding hatch patterns..
As you can see you can make Tiles Rectangular too..!! Just be aware of the sizes you use, they will work, but they may not preview correctly.
Make a drawing similar to my layout so you can place dimensions that you will need to create the hatch...
Experiment with similar patterns and see how you go...pdf of image attached..
happy hatching :-)

Hi All

If you want to make Metric versions of these patterns simply multiply all the numeric values after the angle by 25.4
DO NOT MULTIPLY THE ANGLE BY 25.4... and 0 x 25.4 = 0 ;-)
If you are competent with excel you can import your PAT file as a CSV (comma separated values) file and multiply all columns to the
right of the angle by 25.4...
and save PAT file into the metric folder
If you want to make your own metric tiles you don't need to make them 25.4 x 25.4 Square, you can make them 25 x 25 or 50 x 50
Always keep in mind that the preview of the tile will be better if it is kept within these limits, although a 100 x 100 tile will work you
may not get an accurate preview of it.

Also it's good practice when you're a beginner to test your hatch patterns as you create them, one line at a time, that way you can catch errors easier and always remember that Qcad will need restarted after you make any changes to your pattern , but it's worth the trouble, there is nothing worse than creating a whole pattern and it turns out a mess just because you didn't check your lines of code at each line..
I still do this out of habit.
