DIM Arc Length tool changes the style ...

Post by Husky » Mon Jul 30, 2018 7:23 pm

Hi,

I need to put an Arc Length DIM on an arc but the tool changes the style of dimensioning regarding to the arc length. I like to stick to one style - how can I control the outcome?

I like to stick to Version one ...

peculiar indeed, there must be a reason, the dimensioning changes for arcs <90° ...

This is intended behaviour and in line with the DXF/DWG standard and other CAD systems.

In vocational schools for technical Draftsman/woman we trained our students not to change a dimension style without a good reason.

It is hard for me to believe that a uncontrolled jump from one style to another is indented behavior without a drawing / geometrical reason.
I assume the mentioned "DXF/DWG standard will say to use one of both styles but not both just depending on a mathematically rule.

This mathematically based change of styles has no reason or benefit - it is just confusing for everybody who is designing or reading the drawing. Consistency should be always the goal.

I guess the reason is that radial extension lines look odd for arcs with small angles, especially when placed relatively far away from the entity. Think of arcs that are almost straight lines.

I'm afraid it does depend on a simple rule: radial extension lines for arcs >90 degrees, parallel extension lines for arcs <90 degrees.

If you are interested to learn more, there are some discussions about Autocad and this issue at:

...

I guess QCAD could have a preference for this behaviour, forcing a break in compatibility...

I see. I forgot that the picture is much bigger for you as an software developer as that what we common user are able to imagine.

At least I'm not the only one who thinks that is an odd behavior and I don't know how AC explains that. It can't be a compatibility reason ...

Ok, lets hope that one day other CAD Programs are forced to be compatible to QCAD.

Mac OS Ventura.

I am trying to produce a drawing for a sheet metal shop which requires a curved plate.

For the manufacturer, the dimension of the length of the part before rolling is far more useful. He can cut the sheet to size and then roll it. I cannot seem to be able to dimension the true length of the curve. Am I missing something?

Kmiller12: Dimension > Arc Length dimensions the length of an arc.
